What you will receive.

The number of pottery fragments, the actual size and shape of the pottery fragment or fragments will differ somewhat from the image shown as we do not grade these by weight or size, but by beta emission, the actual colour of the glaze may vary as well, but will usually be orange to red in colour. The fragments may be smooth or have some lumps, bumps or ridges depending on what they came from. Use care when handling them as the pottery fragments may have some sharp edges.

So what you will get is one or more pottery fragments that when combined and tested by us, using the above mentioned probe and meter, gives a total combined beta activity reading of greater than 10000 cpm(counts per minute).

So what can you do with it, or them?

As a Geiger counter check source.

You may have decided that you want to build a small Geiger counter or a similar device as a project and need a reliable source to be able to test it, these would be ideal for the job; or you may have just purchased a new or used Geiger counter and want to see it do something above the ordinary background radiation levels or see if it is working, again these will do just that. With these you will be able to get a needle deflection, or, on a device with a digital display see a reading change; on a device with an audible output you can get some clicks or beeps.

What kind of reading can you expect to get?

The Uranium in the glaze is an alpha emitter; but when you use a Geiger counter to get some clicks out of it, it will be mostly beta particles you are detecting and a small amount of gamma. Although alpha particles carry a great deal of energy they are stopped very easily, in the pottery glaze most are stopped by the vitreous nature of the glaze and only a few escape, the alpha particles that do escape only travel a few centimetres in air and you need a special probe with an alpha window to detect them; so what you are actually detecting are the beta particles that are being emitted from certain of the products of the Uranium decay chain, products such as Thorium 234 and Protactinium 234m, the first two decay products in the decay chain of Uranium 238.

We test these using the beta output only, we use a large area beta scintillation probe with the pottery resting against its surface; this gives us the count we use here. The beta probe used is a Canberra BSP-100A connected to a Canberra ADM-300 survey meter. The actual readings you get will depend on the device you are using, the sensitivity of the device, and the type of detector it uses (GM tube, scintillator detector, semiconductor etc.), also the proximity of the source to the detector and any shielding in between the source and the detector.

What you won’t be able to do with these. You won’t be able to use these to test devices that are designed to measure or detect only high levels of radiation. You also won’t be able to use these to test an alpha particle spark detector (sometimes wrongly called a Geiger counter), for these you would need a strong alpha emitter such as Americium or Polonium. These are not calibrated test sources and cannot be used to calibrate a device.
