Sanguine:   For centuries Sanguine  has been the most favoured drawing medium for portraying the nude, especially among the Italian and French Old Masters. It is a reddish-brown chalk which comes in a variety of shades from earth brown through to rust-red and earth orange with white chalk often being used to highlight the subject. The shade used in this drawing is Caput Mortuum, a natural looking rich dark earthy red pigment.
