Containing some of the most iconic designs in US history, this amazing set of 8 genuine silver United States coins features a Franklin Half Dollar, a Kennedy  Half Dollar, a Barber Quarter,  a Standing Liberty Quarter, a Washington Quarter, a Barber Dime, a Mercury Dime and a Roosevelt Dime!  Benjamin Franklin’s reputation as one of the founding fathers is exceptional. Throughout his life, the Renaissance man invented, legislated, and helped forge the United States into one of the foremost world powers of the early 19th century.  The first Benjamin Franklin Half Dollars were minted in 1948 to commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s contributions to the United States with a coin featuring his likeness. It was released until 1964, when it was replaced with the Kennedy Half Dollar coin. The story of the Kennedy Half Dollar is now numismatic legend: after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, Congress moved quickly to ensure that the United States Mint would be able to create a commemorative half dollar featuring the former president’s profile along with the Presidential Seal. The president’s wife, Jackie Kennedy, was given the choice for which denomination she wanted her husband to appear on and chose the half dollar because she did not want to see George Washington removed from the quarter. The coins were released in January of the following year—just a few short months after JFK’s passing. The design proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since. Barber Quarter  features a bust of Lady Liberty with a triple headdress — a cap, a laurel wreath and a tiny coronet inscribed with her name.   This famous coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. The same design was also used on dime and half dollar coins that circulated at the same time.   These are the coins that jingled in pockets more than 100 years ago and were last struck 16 years before the creation of the first Washington Quarter. Perhaps that’s why so many people don’t even know these coins ever existed! These coins get their name from their designer, Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. The obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty with a triple headdress — a cap, a laurel wreath and a tiny coronet inscribed with her name. Struck in 90% fine silver, these coins are a great find. Most circulated heavily and were worn down or melted for their silver content during times of high silver values.  The design of Miss Liberty standing shield in hand and holding an olive branch was designed by sculptor Herman Atkins MacNeil. The coin’s reverse shows a flying eagle. The series was struck for just 15 years from 1916-1930 and was replaced in 1932 by the Washington Quarter. In 1932, it was the nation's first president's 200th birthday. To honor George Washington and his bicentennial birthday, the US Mint desired to devote one of the larger coins to the late president. So, the Standing Liberty quarter got cut from circulation. The Washington quarter would be in circulation from 1932-present day, with only its alloy changing through the years, from 90% silver to a nickel/copper combo. The Barber Dime was struck from 1892 to 1916. The classic design was the work of Charles Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver. It features Lady Liberty with her hair tucked up under her cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a wreath and the ONE DIME denomination.  The Mercury Dime was struck by the United States Mint from 1916 through 1945. It is considered one of the most attractive of all American coinage designs.   Silver Mercury dimes are highly desirable for their outstanding design features and Silver value. A great way to add Silver to any investment portfolio.  The Roosevelt Dime was released into circulation on January 30,1946 to coincide with what would have been President Franklin Roosevelt’s 64th birthday. Because Roosevelt suffered from polio and had helped found the March of Dimes to fight the disease, using his likeness on the dime was the obvious way to honor the popular president for leading the country through the Great Depression and World War II. Beautifully designed by John R. Sinnock, the design has remained unchanged ever since.  Each coin in your 8 Silver US Coin Set will include a clear 2 x 2 molded plastic coin holder perfect for display in your collection as well as safe, long-term storage. All coins grade as Good or Better(G+).
