LOT OF 23+ FOSSILS
Four (4) species from four (4) Taxonomic Families and two (2) Taxonomic Orders.

GOOD COLLECTION. VERY FAIR RESERVE.
FROM THE RECENTLY DESCRIBED (Geyer et al., 2020a; Geyer et al., 2020b) FOSSIL SOUSS LAGERSTATTE, THE ONLY CAMBRIAN AFRICAN LAGERSTATTE KNOWN TILL DATE.

A) Bigotinops dangeardi (Hupé, 1953);  EXTREMELY RARE!!! ; ENDEMIC FROM THE SOUSS BASIN.
Restoration details: Untouched plate.
Dimensions: Specimen - 1,0 x 0,9 cm.
Weight: 590 g
Locality: Tazemmourt Section, Northern slope of the Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco (Geyer, G. et al., 2020a; Geyer, G. et al., 2020b).
Identification and Taxonomy:
Species: Bigotinops dangeardi (Hupé, 1953); Family: Bigotinidae; Superfamily: Ellipsocephaloidea; Order: Ptychopariida; Class: Trilobita.
The systematics and identification of this clade and specimens are complex and explained below.
Lithostratigraphy: Tiout Member of the Igoudine Formation (Lower Cambrian, Series 2, Stage 3).
Biostratigraphy: Eofallotaspis Zone of the Issendalenian.
Age: Cambrian, Early Paleozoic Era. 521-515 million years old.
Collection: #CALPAIS 9098; Collected March 2021.

Description:
Extremely rare trilobite. Slightly eroded but almost complete. One truly Cambrian Fossils collector trophy. The dorsal exoskeleton of one adult specimen. An exciting addition to any collection. It is a well-preserved specimen on its whole. Due to its rarity, this is one genuinely excellent collector item—a top-grade plate of a rare species.

Complete internal mould, dorsal exoskeleton, partially eroded on central lobe thoraxic segments. The cranidium characteristics, the number of thoracic segments, and the size are typical of adults.

A more than rare fossil record. Just this specimen is worth the fair price we chose. You can take advantage of an exceptional sale discount.

In general, the specimen is well preserved, showing almost all the key structures of the species—typical size for a complete specimen of this age.

Determination/Description characteristics present (main features):
- Adulte, almost complete internal mould, fully inflated, missing pygidium (usually, this tergite misses in Bigotinoids);  part and counterpart;
- Eroded thorax on central lobe but complete on right and left lobes;
- Cephalon is typical of adult individuals: Plectrum in front of the glabella distinct, palpebral lobes relatively short, their posterior tips not reaching to posterior border furrow;
- Frontal lobe narrower than the ones behind, giving glabella an acute aspect (conspicuos in this specimen);
- Interocular areas similar to a slightly extended quarter segment of a circle;
- Very conspicuous pleurae with evident well-preserved pleural spines. Non-evident axial furrows, maybe due to the global erosion of the specimen;
- Previous border more or less evenly curved;
- Elongated body.
- One huge cranidium from the same species (part and counterpart);
- The gorgeous orange colours of the iron oxides of this very particular geological layer are exceptionally well preserved. They are due to replacing the original cuticular substances with ferritic minerals.

Wonderful and well preserved from the cephalon to pygidium, Eroded pygidium and central thoraxic segments - a genuinely very good specimen.

About Bigotinops dangeardi: in 2019, Geyer, G. wrote, "Only one specimen is known from Hupé's original publications.".
Very few have been found in the last four years, and the possible robust determination of this individual to the species level makes it one fantastic discovery.
We'll be able to provide you with the cited paper if you'd like.

About the Bigotinidae Family at Souss Basin:
Genus Hupetina, Bigotina and Bigotinops are present.
Bigotinoids belong to the earliest and least understood trilobite families. Their early occurrence “out of the nowhere” in Moroccan Anti-Atlas (and in Siberia!) is one of the biggest trilobite puzzles. (Geyer, G. & Pais, M.,C., 2022; in study).
Undoubtedly, the stars from the Tazemmourt Section (Geyer, G. et al., 2020a; Geyer, G. et al., 2020b). The oldest trilobites on Earth. At Tazemmourt, we found some specimens with preserved soft tissues, which makes them the oldest soft parts trilobites (and fossils in general) known from Africa to date.

B) Daguinaspis ambroggii (Hupé & Abadie, 1950);  RARE; ENDEMIC FROM THE SOUSS BASIN.
Restoration details: Untouched plate in general. Just one small exploration of pygidium was done, but afterwards, it stopped.
Dimensions: Specimen - 2,4 x 1,1 cm.
Weight: 650 g.
Locality: Tazemmourt Section, Northern slope of the Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco (Geyer, G. et al., 2020a; Geyer, G. et al., 2020b).
Identification and Taxonomy:
Species: Daguinaspis ambroggii (Hupé & Abadie, 1950); Family: Fallotaspididae; Order: Redlichida; Class: Trilobita.
Lithostratigraphy: Upper Amouslek Formation (Lower Cambrian, Stage 3).
Biostratigraphy: Daguinaspis Zone of the Cambrian Fossil Souss Lagerstätte. (see the poster in the picture or consult the website www.cambrian521.com for details).
Age: Cambrian, Early Paleozoic Era. 521-515 million years old.
Collection: #CALPAIS 8292; Collected May 2021.

Description:
Observable on this slab:
- One (1) complete adult internal moult of Daguinaspis ambroggii, with all characteristics of this species very well displayed. Concave pre-glabellar frontal area till the eyes, observable in the fairly-preserved cranidium. The pygidium is not observable - it is probably enrolled inside the matrix. The thorax is fairly preserved, with distinct axial furrows and pleurae. Pleural spines are visible on both sides;
- At least three (3+) more Daguinaspis ambroggii cranidia at the mortality slab;
- Several specimens (8+) of Brevipelta chouberti Brachiopod dispersed at the mortality slab.

About Daguinaspis ambroggii:
Daguinaspis was among the earliest defined genera of Cambrian trilobites that were based on Moroccan material. (...). It has only been found in the Western Anti-Atlas. The occurrences suggest a strong preference for fine-grained sandstones (Geyer, 1996).

Good opportunity at a fair price. Top collection item. It's a very ancient species.

C) Marsaisia devoillei (Geyer, 2020c);  VERY RARE; ENDEMIC FROM THE SOUSS BASIN.
Restoration details: Untouched plate.
Dimensions: 2,5 x 2,1 cm.
Weight: 250 g.
Locality: Tazemmourt Section, Northern slope of the Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco (Geyer, G. et al., 2020a; Geyer, G. et al., 2020b).
Identification and Taxonomy:
Species: Marsaisia devoillei (Geyer, 2020c); Family: Despuljosiidae; Order: Redlichida; Class: Trilobita.
Collection: #CALPAIS 9019; Collected March 2022.

Description:
Presented is one Marsaisia devoillei external mold.
Complete specimen (RARE ! ), it is an exciting and challenging fossil to obtain. It displays some interesting key characteristics of the species:
- The cranidium displays the glabella (eroded),  librigenae and genals;
- Pararel terrace ridges very cosnpicuos in both pleurae and in frontal plate;
- Complete thorax, visible pleurae, and continuous growth pleural spines are all present but eroded, like all the exoskeleton in general;
- Pigidial plate present, partially eroded;

This is a recently described species, a great addition to any good Cambrian fossils collection.

About Marsaisia devoillei:
Marsaisia devoillei n. sp. comes as a surprising addition to the fossil record. Despite the abundant described species (or forms) from the Daguinaspis Zone of the classical sections in the western Anti-Atlas, this species seems to have been neglected. (...) specimens of this species were certainly already sold on the fossil market. However, it was mistaken as Perrector falloti because of the superficial similarity of the cephalon. (Geyer, G. 2020c)
Marsaisia devoillei is known only from the Tazemmourt section with certainty, which suggests that the species may have had a very restricted occurrence. However, despite of decades of fossil collecting in the area, the present data are still insufficient for reliable conclusions. (Geyer, G. 2020c)

D) Brevipelta chouberti (Geyer, 1994) ; ENDEMIC FROM THE SOUSS BASIN.
Restoration details: Untouched plate.
Dimensions: See the scale in the picture.
Weight: 50 g.
Locality: Tazemmourt Section, Northern slope of the Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco (Geyer, G. et al., 2020a; Geyer, G. et al., 2020b).
Identification and Taxonomy:
Species: Brevipelta chouberti (Geyer, 1994); Family: Obolellidae; Order: Obolellida; Class: Brachiopoda.
Collection: #CALPAIS 8520; Collected September 2019.

Description:
Observable in this dead assemblage:
- At least eleven (8+) specimens of Brevipelta chouberti, a poorly known and exotic Brachiopod from the Tazemmourt Section, endemic from the Souss Basin;
- Mainly internal molds;
- Growth rings are well-preserved in some of the specimens;
- Dispersed tergites of Delpuljosiidae exoskeletons;
- The yellow orange colours of the iron oxides of this very particular geological layer are exceptionally well preserved. They are due to replacing the original cuticular substances with ferritic minerals.

This typical mortality slab from the Tazemmourt Section is an excellent addition to any fossil collection.

About Brevipelta chouberti:
Brevipelta chouberti represents not only the oldest described Early Cambrian brachiopod from Africa but also one of the oldest obolellid brachiopods known worldwide (Geyer, G., 1994).

The Souss Konservat Lagerstatte, on the Northern slope of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, is an exceptional geological place full of recent discoveries and descriptions that helped scientists better understand life on Earth during the Lower Cambrian period.

Episodic low oxygenated conditions on the sea floor are likely responsible for the exceptional preservation of animal remains in the upper Amouslek Formation (lower Cambrian, Stage 3) on the northern slope of the western Anti-Atlas, Morocco. This stratigraphic interval has yielded trilobite, brachiopod, and hyolith fossils with preserved soft parts, including some of the oldest known trilobite guts. The “Souss fossil lagerstätte” (newly proposed designation) represents the first Cambrian fossil lagerstätte in Cambrian strata known from Africa and is one of the oldest trilobite-bearing fossil lagerstätten on Earth. Inter-regional correlation of the Souss fossil lagerstätte in West Gondwana suggests its development during an interval of high eustatic levels recorded by dark shales that occur in informal upper lower Cambrian Series 2 in Siberia, South China, and East Gondwana (Geyer, G. & Landing, E. 2021).
