Title: Antique Stucco figure of a Buddha Sakyamuni, Lanna Influence. Phayao Temple Relic. 18/19th C.

Overview: An amazing 18th to 19th century Stucco meditating Buddha, recovered from a Temple in the Phayao province of northern Thailand, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved in a simplistic motif. Images of this type were temple blessed and consecrated by Temple Buddhist Monks prior to their placement within the structural reliquary, indicated by the gold leaf stamp on his chest. Buddha sits on an elevated base, measuring 10.0 inches (25.0cm) in height.

Description: This particular bronze image of a meditating Buddha is referred to as ""Late Lanna"" type, which received a significant amount of influence from the Pala style art, which flourished in northeast India between the 8th and 12th century. Lanna artist blended these influences into an individualized level of artistry, creating a distinct style of Buddha sculptures.

Image Details: A spiritual image of Buddha seated cross-legged in the 'Virasana' (one leg overlapping the other foot) posture, and the hand held in the 'Maravijaya' mudra, with the right hand on the right knee in the gesture of subduing Mara. The body plump 'Khanon Thom' covered by a Sanghati Robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right bare, and is graced by a wide flap draped over the shoulder down to the mid-section. The Buddha features a well rounded face, with downcast eyes, curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, rounded chin, and contoured lips with an exalted expression. The head is covered by small pin curls, surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', without an ornament finial.

The entirety is supported by a elevated base designed with multiple levels. The stucco surface has aged to a deep chocolate brown patina , spotted with blacken lacquer, and with traces of green malachite developing on the surface. The stucco is relatively heavy for its size, with the stucco being thick within the sculptures body. The figure remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues.

About Phayao: Phayao's history reaches back to the founding days of the Lanna Kingdom. Although reputedly established in 1096 by Phor Khun Chom Dham on the site of older towns, it became strategically important in the late 13th century when its ruler, Ngam Muang, established a pact of friendship in 1287 with Ram Kamhaeng of Sukhothai and Mangrai of Chiang Mai. However, the friendship disintegrated fairly rapidly and by 1338 the great-grandson of Mangrai, King Kham Fu, attacked and plundered the city. In 1439 the city was besieged by Sukhothai troops, but they were repulsed using cannon cast from bronze plates covering a chedi. In later centuries, the area came under the control of the Burmese, who depopulated the region to such an extent that the town was temporarily abandoned. In the modern era, Phayao was officially a part of Chiang Rai province until 1977, when Phayao was established as a separate province. The area remains sparsely populated, with the population of Phayao city at about 20,000 residents.
