Lucuma - Fresh Exotic Fruit From Peru.

Lucuma is a fruit from South America. It is native to the Andes Mountains of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.

It has a sweet, creamy and dry flesh. The texture of the flesh is often closely compared to cooked egg yolk. It tastes and smells similar to a combination of maple syrup, sweet potato and butterscotch.

Though this fruit is very popular and economically important too in South America, it is not usually exported further afield.

Lucuma is a national fruit of Chile.

Tiesa, Egg Fruit (name also used for canistel fruit), misi, sea gutta, 'gold of the Incas'.

Origin

Peru.

Preparation

Once the fruit is soft to touch, slice in half and scoop out the flesh. The skin and seeds are not eaten.

Usage

Simply scoop the flesh out and eat raw or mix into smoothies, milk shakes, ice cream, other desserts and cocktails. The flesh is also often made into a powder and sold for its health benefits.

Storage

Keep at room temperature or warmer. Refrigeration once ripe and consume quickly.
