Antique Silver Jungendstil / Art Nouveau Pendant - c.1905 - Murrle Bennett Style ~Welcome to my auction for this beautiful early 20th century silver pendant and chain~ This is fantastically designed and wearable piece of art nouveau jewellery - manufactured in sterling silver and set with two semi precious, black stones. The pendant sits upon a sterling silver 18" chain - it's quite possible and relatively common that the chain is a slightly later replacement, but the gauge and length is a good match to the pendant. The pendant is simply marked '925' as is the chain on its clasp indicating sterling grade silver - there are no visible makers marks. The style is very much like that of Murrle Bennett & Co the Anglo / German operation that existed from 1896 through to 1914 - amongst other companies they supplied jewellery for Liberty & Co - unmarked pieces are known but I can only catalogue this as 'in the style of' - also, much of the Murrle Bennett silver jewellery was made in 950 grade silver. This is a handcrafted piece rather than a mass produced die stamped item - testament to this is tool marks to the rear of the piece where the silversmith has shaped and formed the piece - it's quite possible this could be a student or apprentice piece on account of the lack of makers marks but it's really impossible to say. As mentioned above there are two coltet set semi precious cabochon gemstones - the stone appear to be black and opaque in colour - I'm not a qualified gemologist nor do I have a refractometer to test the refraction of the stones so I can only guess at what type of stone this is - it could be some kind of black jasper, obsidian, onyx or even jade. The measurement of this item are approximately 3.1cm high (including jumpring) x 2.5cm wide - the chain length is 18 inches - the total unpacked weight is 4.9g. The condition of this item is good - as mentioned above this is a handcrafted piece and as such shows patina and marks associated with this - there is an extremely minor and slight twist in the silver but this is tiny and does not detract at all and is only mentioned for the accuracy of the description - when worn any minor imperfections will not be seen. This is a beautiful and wearable piece of early 20th century jewellery - totally right for the period and has an antique and yet modern look to it - if this could be attributed to a well known maker the cost could run into hundreds of pounds but I'm pleased to say this is a much more affordable piece - please study the pictures provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
