'STROLLING PLAYERS.' Original master print, titled: 'Strolling Players'. It shows a troupe of actors preparing for a performance inside a barn. Several figures are rehearsing their roles, or preparing materials and props. At the same time this plate criticizes the 1737 "Act Against Strolling Players", taking away the livelyhood of many travelling actors by demanding proper licensing. The imagery of this plate is discussed on numerous websites. Made by Thomas Cook after William Hogarth. Medium: engraving / etching on wove paper. Sheet size: 57 x 43.5 cm (22.44 x 17.13 inch). Image size: 53.5 x 42 cm. (21.06 x 16.54 inch). Condition: good, given age. The margins cropped close. Three horizontal lines of fading across the image. Margins a little stained. A large dampstain in the right side of the image (hardly visible through the intricate engraving). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
