Antique Hand Made Arts & Crafts Brass Casket Jewellery Box - c.1900 ~Welcome to my auction for this beautiful early 20th century bra ss box~ This is a beautiful and useful piece of antique brass - completely handmade in the arts & crafts style. The Arts & Crafts movement was really a rebellion against the industrialisation of manufacturing techniques - this item is typical of the kind of work produced from the late 1880's through to around 1910 - the decoration is completely hand worked rather than being machine stamped - you can see where the maker has struck a line or piece of decoration into the metal - it was a real labour of love for the maker. The box is made from solid brass and is decorated with repousse patterns to the lid and 3 of the side panels - the panel a the back is plain which suggests this may have been facing a wall perhaps - the underside is also plain and free from decoration. The design has been pressed and hammered into the design from the reverse side which raises the details of the design and gives it a very tactile feel. The whole box sits on 4 strut feet which raises it around an inch from the surface it sits on - the inside has been lined with a bottle green velvet which acts a nice cushion for pieces of jewellery or trinkets. The lid is hinged and has a little metal catch attached which makes it clips into place. I'm not sure if this item has been made by a person who you could describe as a professional craftsman - it has more of the feel of a piece of work by an enthusiast who has probably made the item for it to be used by themselves or a family member - there are of no stamps or signatures to the piece but the style of manufacture is very distinctive for the period and definitely takes many influences from the arts & crafts movement - you could most certainly describe it as 'unique' and I'd be astounded if you find an identical one. The casket is good size for storing things and measures in at 17.2cm wide x 10.7cm depth x 8.2cm high - it's also substantial in weight weighing in at 572g unpacked. The box is in good all round condition - there are naturally small marks to the metal where it has been used for over 100 years but these only add to its charm - lots of patina has built up in the little crevices of the design which really give it lots of depth - there are no nasty dents, scratches or other damage to report - the brass has a lovely warm glow where it has been handled and enjoyed over the last century. Please study the pictures provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige. Postage to U.K addresses is £4.50 (signed for) - postage to international addresses £18.95 (tracked / signed). The cost for international mail is based upon its size and weight with the high weight being the deciding factor in the costings. Thanks for looking.
