The case is made from solid mahogany and has been beautifully inlaid. The dial is signed 'R. STEWART, GLASGOW'. The Robert Stewart name is famous for being appointed as silversmith to Queen Victoria, we also have the following information for R. Stewart: ‘The business started in 1835 as Allan & Robert Stewart, Clock and Watchmakers, 162 Trongate, Glasgow. 1835-6 they were J. & R. Stewart at 162 Trongate, Glasgow. 1840 it was R. Stewart at 162 Trongate, Glasgow. 1845-56 it was R. Stewart at 25 Argyle Street Glasgow 132 Argyle Street by 1860 until at least 1890 Also at 4 Buchanan Street by 1864 until at least 1896. 122 & 134 Argyle Street 1886-1896 as goldsmith, jeweller, wholesaler and appointed silversmith to Queen Victoria.’ The clock is very nicely shaped and around the front edge is double fine stringing. Then below the dial is a lovely inlaid scene with two young fauns playing horns and with other musical instruments. The top is arched. The dial is set out with Arabic numerals, with small quarter Arabic numerals at the quarter hours above the main numerals. It is finished with a super pair of shaped fingers. The dial is covered with bevelled convex glass framed in brass. The clock is raised on a pretty brass bun feet. To the rear the clock has a brass panel which is removed to allow the clock to be wound and the time altered. The clock comes complete with it's double end key for winding the clock and altering the fingers. The movement is happily ticking away. DIMENSIONS: The approximate maximum dimensions are: - 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) wide - 3.25 inches (8 cm) deep - 10 inches (25.5 cm) high AGE: The clock is circa 1890. CONDITION: The case is in lovely condition. As with any antique there are just minor marks commensurate with age and very careful use. The clock is happily ticking away.
