Scottish Souvenir Wood ware is known as Mauchline Ware because they were originally made in the Ayrshire town of Mauchline and 'Treen' is an old Scottish word for ‘wood’. They were made to sell to 19th Century tourists as souvenirs originally from Scotland and later from places in the UK and around the world.
The production of souvenir wood ware for the tourist market began in the 1790s with the snuff box industry in Ayrshire. By 1820, Mauchline ware was well established, supplying souvenirs from wood grown ‘on the Field of Bannockburn’, ‘on the Abbey Craig’, ‘on the slopes of Stirling Castle’ etc and made into sewing requisites, egg cups, trinket boxes, napkin rings and many other kinds of souvenirs, transfer printed with a line drawing or topographic photo of the place.
