This 18th century example is of small proportions, just perfect for today's homes. Although it was originally made to hold a matching cartel or bracket clock, it now has the freedom to display any number of your special antique or decorative treasures. Originating from France during the 1790-1800 period, of course France being the home of Boulle inlay. Unusually, this is a small wall bracket because they can be gargantuan and maybe a little over the top for modern taste. Our example is hand carved in this gorgeous, flowing, serpentine shape from a very close grained wood (see the original tool marks to the reverse). This wood is then inlaid to the front with naturalistic marquetry designs from hand cut sections of brass and stunning engraved floral designs from inlaid sections of mother of pearl. Finally the wood was stained very dark and highly lacquered to give the appearance of Ebony to contrast against the white of the mother of pearl. Remains of the original maker/ retailers label to the reverse. Measuring 9.5" (24 cm) across by 8.25" (21 cm) tall by 5" (12.5 cm) through. Weighing 2 lb 5 oz (1.06 kg ) Condition this ancient wall bracket has some signs of age. We have not cleaned this example preferring its original colour and patination. There are some drying hairlines to the wood and the odd ancient worm hole. There is some minor flaking to the lacquered finish to the plain sides. Some areas of the brass boulle inlay are a little proud, so too a couple of the top mother of pearl flowers. However, NO inlay is missing and all inlay is stable and secure. The flimsier securing brackets are a later 19th century replacement; you can see two rectangular securing holes to the top where this bracket would have originally hooked over metal securing hooks on the wall. You can also see on the top the foot impressions from the feet of the original matching clock. Item ID:10926 Condition: Condition this ancient wall bracket has some signs of age.
