Andy Summers' Fender Telecaster

Andy had already had some music business success in late 1960’s Britain but had concentrated on classical guitar in the early 1970’s when one of his Californian students sold him this well worn and much modified Telecaster for $200. The front pickup had been replaced with a PAF humbucker and the bridge pickup remounted in the body rather than on the broken brass bridge plate. The bridge pieces had been replaced with brass and tuners replaced with Schaller machine heads. The electronics had not escaped attention either and had been rewired to accommodate an overdrive unit mounted in a hollowed out section in the back of the body, controlled by a third knob directly under the volume and tone controls. A phase switch had been mounted on the control plate and a preamp switch added to the body.  The British punk scene exploded in the mid 1970’s and around this time Andy met up with Stewart Copeland and Sting and joined a punk band called Police.  Roxanne, So Lonely, Message In a Bottle, Walking On the Moon, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Every Breath You Take, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Synchronicity II and many more were all recorded and performed live on this unique Telecaster.
