A very fine early 19th-Century watercolor painting depicting a Scottish castle ruin beside a loch. The sky suggests dawn, casting a warm light over the mountains and gentle reflections on the water. The castle ruins sit atop a mound, flanked by a track and old pine trees.  The artist has used considerable skill to capture the scene, which is a good example of William IV era painting and a typical subject of the time.  The painting has been applied to a matting paper, which is signed for O.Gordon, 1833 in the bottom left hand corner. We have not removed the painting from its mount but it is presumed to be signed by the artist on the reverse. There is a modern framing label to the reverse marked Jedburgh, Scotland. Jedburgh is a historic town in the ancient county of Roxburghshire, known for its Abbey and Castle ruins and long history going back to the 9th Century AD.  In superb condition and sympathetically framed, this artwork is ready to display.  Painting size: 6" x 5 " (15cm x 12.5cm) Frame size: 11" x 9" (28.5cm x 24cm) During the 19th Century, Scottish castles were romanticized as symbols of a bygone era of chivalry, romance, and adventure. This idealization was largely driven by the popularity of Sir Walter Scott's novels, which painted a vivid and romantic picture of Scotland's history and landscape. Many wealthy Victorians purchased or built their own castles in Scotland, seeking to immerse themselves in the country's rich cultural heritage and folklore. Today, this romanticized vision of Scottish castles continues to attract visitors from around the world.
