VERY nice Strad from late 1940's manufactured in New York and re-lacquered at some point in it's life. Serial number 7570 is listed in the Bach Loyalist Registry online as being an M bore with a 7 leadpipe and a 37 bell. There are no model markings on the bell besides the normal Bach info and New York 67. I have no way of knowing actual dimensions, but the horn is a unique and wonderful player! Condition: As mentioned, the horn has received some TLC...lacquer has some areas of wear, specifically on the leadpipe, on the bell along the valves, a couple of spots on the bell and an area on the top of the tuning slide. A couple of small dents and a small scratch on the back side of the bell. I believe the leadpipe is original as there is some minor corrosion inside. It might be red rot, but I am a fanatic about bore shininess and I WOULD NOT want to put another 'pipe on it and risk losing it's character and sound. Besides, there is probably decades of life left in it. Valves appear to be nickel or chrome plated with very little wear evident and I don't know if they have been redone. Valves are smooth, fast and light but compression is not real good. I use Hetman #3 and have gotten along fine in all types of playing situations. BUT you need to know going in that a valve refit in in the cards somewhere down the road. I WAS NOT informed of the issue so I wanted the next buyer to be aware of it. If the horn does not sell at a fair price I will send it off to Andersons. Playing qualities: Bach M-bores are known for being easy to play. This one, however, goes even further. SUPER efficient and practically "speaks" for itself. Intonation is surprisingly good...D's and F's in the staff are fine (believe me, you will NOT miss the 1st saddle!), E in staff not flat, and the upper register is in tune too with somewhat flexible but really nice slotting. D below the staff needs some adjustment and C# needs a bunch. Sound is typically Bach warm with lots of core. Does it sound like a Mt Vernon 37? Well, no. It's close but maybe a bit warmer and "intimate" if that's a proper word. It comes without a case or mouthpiece. I can ship it bubble-wrapped but would prefer to send it off in a plastic Gator case--my son's marching horn case :( which is form-fitting and decent. It will come at a price, however. Just let me know what you want and I'll take the extra cost into consideration. Thanks for looking!
