2× Hosta sieboldiana var. Elegans  or Giant Blue Hosta

+1 Hosta "DevonGreen" as a bonus plant.

3 Mature sizable plants reasonably priced.

Carefully selected for their decorative looks and garden merit, this hosta trio could be the answer to your problem of how to deal with the shady parts of a large garden.

Hosta is a genus of plants commonly known as plantain lilies. The name Hosta is in honour of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host. However most modern plants were introduced from Japan to Europe by Philipp Franz von Siebold in the mid-19th century.

Hosta sieboldiana, or Giant Blue Hosta, is one of the hostas named after him.

It is one of the biggest in size, and its leaves are so tough that they are rarely troubled by slugs and snails. These molluscs  are the biggest trouble with all the hostas.

Hostas are often offered  as the best shade-loving plants for the perennial garden, which is hard to dispute. But I grew mine everywhere in the garden. Sun or shade, as long there is some moisture, they perform regardless.

Because of their great foliage hostas are  thought of as foliage-only plants, but all have very attractive and sometimes parfumed pale lavender or white flowers. They last forever in the flower arrangements, and hosta leaves are florist's favourite things.

Hosta sieboldiana is a  very large hosta with heart-shaped, olive-green to blue, puckered leaves beautifully bloommed. Spikes of trumpet-shaped,pale -lavender ,almost white flowers appear in July and August, and, provided they are protected from slug and snail damage, the leaves retain their freshness until the end of September.

This pretty plaintain makes a statement on its own in a large container or as a bright full stop in a shady area under deciduous trees.

Slugs LOVE hostas! ( Sieboldiana is the least favourite!)

You may have had some bad experiences . So have I.

Slugs are persistent little fellows..

I have found that cultivars matter ,some are tastier to slugs than others.I suppose that sufficiently hungry slug will eat anything. But the slugs first choice of lunch is a decaying matter. So it pays to be not too tidy in the garden. In my case of a one woman operation, it's impossible anyway. So,I don't  bother tidying spring bulbs foliage, and it's magically disappear with the help of slugs and snails.

And did you ever wonder what happens to that huge bird crap on the garden bench that disappears overnight? Yarp! Slugs were busy tidying. Everyone has their uses..

And I tell you worse:they are cannibalistic creatures, they eat their dead.

No gentle  strolling and polite slug patrols at midnight for me. No, Sir! I do not relice them later in my enemy's garden. First, I don't have an enemy. Second, the culprits have a strong homing instinct and come back to the same cabbage patch (hosta) soon after being released.

The thing is,( and it's not a pretty site) to wait for a warm, moist night, get your head light on, arm  yourself (sharp pair of scissors are my weapon of choice), and go around snipping the mollusks in half right where you find them. Leave the bodies behind. That night your hostas will be safe and the slugs will feasts on the flesh of their brothers/sisters ( they are actually true hemafrodites,so both sexes in one ,which makes their sexlife as twice as exiting as ours ), and tidy up the massacre you left behind by next morning. Bone appetite! Sorry about the gory details and too much information.

Don't use chemicals. Encourage birds into your garden. Healthy ecosystems  tend to regulate themself pretty well. My hostas remain through the session with a very minimal slug damage, despite that I saw ( and have a photographic proof) a slugs -monsters as long as 15 cm and fat as a Frankfurter sausage.

Hosta Devon Green ( Given as a bonus, free of charge with every order! ) is a medium hosta producing lavender flowers held above elegant , intense  green leaves.

One need green hostas to plant in between variegated, to show off their fancy leaf markings at their best advantage. Too many variegated varieties close together can be a bit too busy.

If you have never grown hostas before, I would highly recommend it. They are extremely easy and pretty much self efficient.Once established, they will demand little attention and provide much pleasure.

Happy gardening!

Please note that the delivery time stated 20 days for my piece of mind only. In case of inclement weather or holiday. Plants are dispatched every Monday/Tuesday by Royal mail tracked 24, and with you in 1-2 days time same week.

I am always trying to avoid live plants stack in transit over the weekend.
